A “mood” can be understood as a feeling or state of mind that lasts for a little while.  Usually, moods are temporary. When someone suffers from a mood disorder, however, the state of mind does not disappear after a short while but continues to affect the person.

Imagine a continuum along which different moods could be plotted.

At one end could be what we may describe as ‘normal’ moods (the position where a person’s emotional state of mind may change for brief periods according to what they have experienced, but which is temporary).

At the other end would be a mood disorder (the position where a person’s emotions are overtaken by a particular state of mind that does not go away with any ease).

3-faces-of-bipolar-disorder

There are basically three types of mood disorder:

  • Those that have one basic, governing emotional state.

These disorders are mostly associated with depression.

  • Those that have two governing emotional states.

These disorders are recognizable in that they have two, opposite states that exist in quick succession of each other.

They are referred to as bipolar disorders.

  • Those that have an identifiable cause.

These disorders can be linked to a medical illness, or condition; or to the use of a substance.

The depressive disorders differ from bipolar disorders in that sufferers only experience one type of emotional state. They do not experience the ‘high’ of a manic phase.

Mood disorders are one of the most common psychiatric conditions encountered amongst patients. They are treatable. In fact, it is important to treat mood disorders as it is not productive or healthy to live in a persistent emotional state that affects behavior and relationships in the world.
